What is a ride to work scheme in New Zealand?

A PERK THAT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE

A ride to work scheme is an arrangement that allows employees to access a bike or e-bike through their employer, typically via salary sacrifice. The employee agrees to reduce their gross salary by the cost of the bike, meaning payments are made from pre-tax income. The result is a meaningfully lower net cost compared to buying the same bike at retail.

In New Zealand, this arrangement is made significantly more attractive by the FBT exemption introduced in April 2023. Employees using Northride's scheme typically save 25% or more on the cost of their bike, depending on their salary, tax situation and the price of the bike. Compared to buying a bike outright or using traditional finance, the overall cost is lower.

The catch? Someone has to ask first. That's where you come in.

Petrol prices aren't coming down

Your daily commute costs more than it used to. With Northride's employee bike benefit, you could ride to work on a bike you chose, paid for through your salary before tax. That means you pay less tax and you stop filling up the tank or paying parking.
